Smiling Brothers

$2,400.00

Artist: Akuda Fanizani

20″ x 12″ (100 lbs) – Springstone

Two figures, side by side, their faces turned toward each other with those characteristic mysterious smiling eyes that made Fanizani’s work unmistakable. Curator Olivier Sultan wrote that to Fanizani, “family represents a poetic world, moving in its simplicity and its tenderness” — and here that world is rendered in full: the quiet pleasure of companionship, of being known, of belonging together.

About the Artist

Akuda Fanizani (1932–2011) is one of the founding figures of Zimbabwean stone sculpture. Born in 1932 in what was then Northern Rhodesia, he moved south in search of work and discovered stone sculpture at Tengenenge farm in 1966. Over four decades he exhibited internationally — from Los Angeles to London, Sydney to Brussels — before the National Gallery of Zimbabwe honored him with a solo retrospective in 2005. He sculpted independently until his death in 2011.
