Plant Highlight: Agave colimana

January 2004

Seldom found in cultivation, Agave colimana is one of the larger members of the group which includes the more familiar species Agave filifera and A. geminiflora. Species of this group lack teeth along the leaf edges, but usually have fibrous margins which shred to produce ornamental curling threads. A. colimana grows on rock outcrops at or near the Pacific coast in the Mexican states of Colima and Jalisco. Since it produces neither offsets nor plantlets on the flowering spike, it must be grown from seed. Our flowering specimen is about 25 years old.
