Nursery Associate – Part Time

Salary: $20 an hour

This position requires a minimum of 15 hours a week, with shifts scheduled Tuesday – Sunday 8:30am-4:30pm.

Classification: Non-exempt

The Ruth Bancroft Garden, a public garden and a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization, is a nationally significant collection and display of drought tolerant plants from arid regions of the world, which Ruth Bancroft found can thrive in the inland coastal region of California.


Job Function

The Associate’s main responsibilities are to welcome visitors, process admissions, sell Garden memberships, and support daily plant sales through educated and engaging customer service.


Duties and Responsibilities

Customer service in the nursery and kiosk:

  • Greet all customers as they approach the kiosk and nursery sales area.
  • Answer customer questions and provide an exceptional customer experience.
  • Generate membership sales by selling the many values and benefits; be well acquainted with our membership options.
  • Build sustainable relationships and trust with customers through open and interactive communication. Share your passion and your knowledge!
  • Process payments using POS system.
  • Carry heavy plants, pots, and soil to customer’s cars.
  • Stay informed of events, workshops, and services offered.
  • Assist with opening and closing the Garden. The Garden is open to the public from 9-4 Tuesday through Sunday.


Nursery and facilities:

  • Water, weed, treat pests, dead-head, and prune.
  • Fill soil bags.
  • Receive and process deliveries.
  • Label/price, stock, and stage nursery plants and merchandise.
  • Work RBG major events, including evening and weekend events.
  • Assist with restocking and organizing retail areas daily, as well as before, after, and during events.
  • Keep Nursery grounds clean and free of trash, level out pathways as needed.


Desirable Qualifications

  • Ideal candidate must be friendly, engaging, and outgoing.
  • Sales and customer service oriented, with excellent communication skills
  • Guest services and retail sales experience preferred.
  • A dedicated interest in plants and/or a working knowledge of the plants featured in the Garden/Nursery is preferred.
  • Must be able to take direction, work independently and with a team, and be self-motivated.
  • Able to adapt/respond respectfully to many types of personalities.
  • Eager to learn about the Garden and answer basic questions from the public.
  • Ability to switch priorities quickly and restart previous tasks as needed.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs safely and regularly
  • Able to stand for extended periods of time and work outdoors year-round
