2020 was not a great travel year, but Brian Kemble (Curator) and Walker Young (Assistant Curator) managed to get in one expedition to the Mojave Desert in February 2020, before the pandemic lock-downs put a crimp on travel plans. A friend from South Africa was visiting the U.S. for the first time, and had a busy schedule of talks for Cactus & Succulent societies in the L.A. area. Brian and Walker could not let him come so far and see nothing except Los Angeles, so they hatched a plot to kidnap him for a couple of days (between his commitments), and off they went to the Mojave. It was bitterly cold at that time of year, but the vistas were breathtaking, and the Joshua Trees, barrel cacti and agaves were as sculptural as one could wish for.
