Have you ever knocked on wood? Most likely you have, but have you thought about the meaning and history behind it? Some of the practices and attitudes that people have toward the landscape hark back to ancient beliefs about the “genius loci” or spirit of place. Gardens, in particular, are places where people often find a spiritual connection or sense of wellbeing.

This presentation by landscape architects Chip Sullivan and Elizabeth Boults examines how recognizing the “spirit of place” in our everyday lives can help us live more attuned with nature’s mysteries. They conclude with a look at how various stories and archetypes of nature have been represented in the Tarot, and how the Tarot can help elevate one’s consciousness of the environment.
