(Lecture) Plant Exploration & Hybridizing

Wednesday, September 20, 2023 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

$20.00 – $35.00

Join us for an afterhours lecture at the Garden with Kelly Griffin, renowned and accomplished succulent hybridizer, propagator and avid plant explorer.  Like many of us, his interest in plants and particular succulent plants, started at a fairly young age.  He’ll talk about his travels and his extensive work with plant hybridizing projects.

Since his early exposure, Kelly has traveled to 20+ countries searching for plants, visiting Madagascar and South Africa five times,  and Mexico 25 plus times. He recently returned from a wonderful extended trip to Namibia.  He previously worked as the Curator of Succulents at Rancho Soledad Nursery and is now the Succulent Plant Development Manager at Altman Plants for the past 11 years.

He is well-known for his hybridizing and is responsible for many succulent hybrids now in the trade, including aloes, agaves and echeverias. His specialty are Aloe hybrids that are 30 years in the making (Pink Blush, Delta Lights, Christmas Sleigh, Coral Fire, etc) and some Agave hybrids and selections (Blue Glow, Snow Glow, Cubic, Black and Blue, Dragon Toes, Spawn, and Crème Brûlée, to name just a few). He is also responsible for making seed from many interesting species and propagating the seed for all to enjoy in cultivation.

Kelly has been a member of the San Diego Cactus and Succulent Society since 1992.  He has been on the board of Directors for the SDCSS for as he says,  “way too long,”  and is currently a director. He has served 4 years as SDCSS President and 2 years as Vice-President as well.  He was very honored to have been named a Fellow of the San Diego Society.

He currently serves as a director on the board of the Cactus and Succulent Society of America and is actively involved in supporting the conservation of all plants but succulent plants in particular. You can follow Kelly on his adventures here.

The lecture will approximately be one hour and registrants will have access to the Garden and Nursery until 7pm.  Cold non-alcoholic drinks and light snacks will be provided.
