Death Bloom Tour- Agaves
Saturday, July 20 @ 9:30 am - 10:30 am
$20.00 – $37.00Join Brian Kemble, long-time Curator, on a special tour of the Garden’s extensive collection of agaves, focusing on those that are blooming this year.
Agaves are remarkable sculptural plants native to the Americas, with the greatest concentration of species found in Mexico. Their bold form makes them natural focal points, and they are staples of succulent gardens. In size, they range from gigantic, with leaves 8 or 9 feet long, to modest-sized, with leaves only a few inches long. All have monocarpic rosettes of leaves, meaning that they go without flowering until the ends of their lives, at which time the central growing point shoots upward into an impressive flower stalk, surprisingly tall considering the size of the plant from which it springs. This is the final chapter in the plant’s life, which is why we have called our guided walk the “Death Bloom Tour”.
