Curator’s Travelogue Series- Haworthias in Habitat
Saturday, November 2, 2019 @ 9:30 am - 10:30 am$10 – $15
Everyone admires the jewel-like quality of the retuse haworthias – those with triangular window leaves which can seem to glow with an inner light under the right lighting conditions. But what do these plant gems look like in nature? Come find out at RBG Curator Brian Kemble’s talk, entitled “Haworthias Along South Africa’s Garden Route” and see pictures of the plants in habitat from his recent travels. The Garden Route runs along South Africa’s southern coast, going eastward from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth, running right through the heart of the territory where the retuse haworthias are most abundant. This route gets its name from the many ornamental plants that grow there, including terrestrial orchids, Pelargonium species, bulbs such as Watsonia, and plants in the Proteaceae (Protea, Leucadendron). There are also many succulents to be seen besides the haworthias, including aloes, crassulas, gasterias and euphorbias. You can take in all these beauties without even getting a passport and join us for this presentation in the new Visitor & Education Building.
