    About the Tiles

At the entrance of the Ruth Bancroft Garden, there are two community-built mosaic murals by artists Donna Billick and Amanda Larson. The handmade clay tiles of cacti and succulents were made over a two-day workshop where over 200 community members participated. On the opposite side of the murals, there is a growing collection of donor tiles that honor the many individuals, families, organizations and more that have contributed to the garden. The Ruth Bancroft Garden Donor Tiles are handmade by artist Amanda Larson. It is a labor-intensive process that takes many weeks. Each tile starts out as raw clay that is then sculpted, painted, kiln fired, sandblasted and lastly, installed on the garden walls.

Twice a year the garden places an order of tiles. Donors choose an inscription for either a small, medium, or large tile size. After the order is placed, Amanda builds each tile, paints, and adds the iconic agave plant. Tiles are then air dried for a week and fired in the kiln to over 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the tiles are removed from the kiln and cooled the inscription is taped out and sandblasted on the surface. Lastly, the tiles are installed on the garden walls and grouted in place.  Each tile is beautifully unique and made with love.

If you happen to be at the garden and see Amanda installing more donor tiles (likely with her kids in tow), come say hi!
