Assistant Sales Manager

Salary: $27 an hour

This is a full-time, non-exempt position: Wednesday-Sunday 8:30am-4:30pm

Reports to: Nursery General Manager (GNM)

The Ruth Bancroft Garden, a public garden and a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization, is a nationally significant collection and display of drought tolerant plants from arid regions of the world which Ruth Bancroft found can thrive in the inland coastal region of California.


Job Function/Position Summary:

The Assistant Sales Manager (ASM) is responsible for overseeing the daily operation of the Kiosk, leading the Kiosk Associate team, and co-managing the Nursery Associate Team. The main responsibilities of the ASM are to support the team in generating sales, memberships, garden admissions, and delivering an exceptional customer experience.

The Nursery/Kiosk team is responsible for an operation which generates a significant portion of the Garden’s annual budget, generated by on-site sales from plants, merchandise, memberships, and admissions.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leads the team in generating membership sales and admissions through excellent customer service, and effective communication
  • Manage daily operations of the Kiosk including POS transactions, opening and closing the Kiosk, balancing the registers, and keeping the Kiosk stocked and organized
  • Educate and train Nursery/Kiosk team on selling the values and benefits of membership, including promoting the various membership options
  • Problem-solve and resolve any sales or membership issues that arise
  • Assist the GNM in interviewing and training new Kiosk Associates
  • Train, coach, and issue performance reviews to build Nursery/Kiosk team confidence and success
  • Train team on inventory and POS processes
  • Collaborate with nursery managers and marketing team to create new membership promotions
  • Coordinate and assist with a variety of sales-related activities including generating meeting topics and participating in multi-department meetings, development and maintenance of sales and marketing literature, and inventory management and maintenance
  • Generate and distribute reports regarding sales results, membership and admissions results, market conditions and variable influences on important KPI like conversion.
  • Participate in monthly Nursery/Kiosk Manager meetings to discuss nursery operations, special upcoming member sales, and other nursery/kiosk-related topics
  • Collaborate with GNM and the Volunteer Coordinator to identify volunteer opportunities and tasks
  • Collaborate with GNM and Inventory Manager/Buyer to identify trends, common customer requests, and areas of opportunity for the Kiosk
  • Support GNM in ordering merchandise
  • Assist in inventory control and maintenance tasks such as cycle counts, item cleanup, and annual physical inventory count
  • Collaborate with GNM and Marketing Director on Nursery marketing campaigns to produce content for marketing materials, including images and copy for nursery areas, events, and individual items
  • Stay informed of upcoming events, workshops, and services and communicate to the Nursery/Kiosk team and customers
  • Work major events as needed, including evenings and weekends
  • Develop and nurture relationships with clients and vendors
  • Adhere to procedures, guidelines, and policies outlined by the Garden



  • A minimum of three years retail merchandise sales experience
  • A minimum of one year retail team management
  • Nursery, public garden, conservatory, or greenhouse leadership preferred
  • Friendly, outgoing, strong communicator with groups and individuals
  • Customer oriented and able to adapt/respond to different personalities
  • Proficient with multiple POS and inventory systems
  • Proficient with Microsoft Suite, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Able to learn about the plants featured in the Garden and Nursery
  • Able to learn about the Garden’s history, collections, and answer in-depth questions for the public
  • Must be able to stay productive with minimal direction and work independently
  • Must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs and stand for extended periods of time
