2017 Honorees for the Golden Barrel Award for Philanthropy:

Melissa Allen & Elisabeth Andreason

Elisabeth Andreason and Melissa Allen, the 2017 recipients of the Ruth Bancroft Garden Golden Barrel Award for Philanthropy, are truly our own real Dynamic Duo. We honor them for their amazing feats of community kindness and outreach on behalf of the Garden, and so many other worthy causes!

Enthusiastic members and major supporters of the Garden since 2011, Elisabeth and Melissa have double-handedly introduced hundreds of their closest friends and colleagues to the Garden during Saturday morning breakfast tours and summer Sunset Socials in the Garden. The duo also regularly open their home and garden for extra special RBG exclusive events like Melissa’s Classic Tea party, and Backyard Bocce and BBQ, which support the Garden’s Annual Dinner. Melissa creates luscious meals and home baked goodies, and Elisabeth inspires the crowd by showcasing their joint enthusiasm for the Garden and its gifts of beauty, conservation, community fun and respite.

In addition to being super promoters of RBG, Elisabeth and Melissa are deeply involved in many other organizations: the Mt. Diablo Unitarian Universalist Church; the Concord Friday Rotary Club, and its RotaCare Clinic, which provides free medical care to those without insurance; the First Tee of Contra Costa; and Facing History- helping over 300,000 students connect with history and consider how they can make a difference.

What drives these super busy women to make a difference to so many? Melissa says, “We feel lucky and blessed in our lives and want to give back to the organizations that have inspired us and that work to make all of our lives better.”

Mission Statement
The mission of the Ruth Bancroft Garden, Inc. is to preserve this exceptional example of garden design and to continue to develop its collection of water-conserving plants for the education and enjoyment of the public.
