Garden-Inspired Words

"Words of Appreciation" by Charlotte Blome

(on her farewell as Garden Manager, 11.17.12)

Recently, I was asked by someone, in all sincerity, if there were other Ruth Bancroft gardens, or if this was the only one. I loved this question because it gave me an opportunity to explain that Ruth’s garden is, indeed, unique; the only collaboration of two people: renowned garden designer Lester Hawkins and the incomparable Ruth Bancroft. It is an authentic and original garden, that could only have been made by these people, in this place and at this time.

I think Ruth knew she had made something powerful and did not want to keep it all to herself. I am grateful that she chose to share it with us, and trusts us to care for it, nurture it and shepherd it into the future. But its greatness lies in the fact that it is more than a garden- as incredible a garden as it is.

It is a nexus; a place that connects people and ideas. And not just any people- this garden tends to attract especially talented, dedicated, interesting, and above all generous people.

There is an old adage that goes like this:

“Many things grow in a garden that were never sown there.”

A truer thing could not be said of Ruth’s garden, which has grown so many friendships, and has been such a source of inspiration, wonder and possibility.

So, a heartfelt and huge thank you to all of you who have helped in one way or another grow, not only the material reality of our garden, but also the intangibles that transcend the garden itself and make it truly great.
